40 years ago: City considers restricting trash pick-up to curbside only

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 23, 1972:

The Lawrence City Commission this week deferred action on a new trash pick-up policy, requesting more information on city staff’s recommendation on uniform locations for residents to set their trash. The city policy at the time was “that we’ll pick it up wherever they set it,” said City Manager Buford Watson. Having all Lawrence residents set their semi-weekly refuse on the curb was expected to save the city an estimated $60,000 annually. According to a “guess” from the sanitation department, about 27 percent of city residents were already placing cans or bags on the curb. Watson stressed that, if the new policy were adopted, arrangements would be made for people who were not able to take their trash to the curb.
