25 years ago: City commission candidates meet for first debate

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 23, 1987:

  • The ten candidates in Lawrence’s March 3 city commission primary had recently met for their first debate. Before a crowd of more than 100 people, the candidates spoke on current city issues such as neighborhood zoning, the proposed southwest Lawrence bypass, and the proposed downtown mall.
  • Elsewhere in the U.S., artist Andy Warhol had recently died of a heart attack, and congressional investigators in the nation’s capital were continuing to look into a “possible White House cover-up of the Iran-Contra affair.”
