From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 17, 1987:

A representative from the developers planning a downtown mall in Lawrence was scheduled to visit town this week. Don Jones of the Cleveland firm Jacobs, Visconsi & Jacobs was expected to provide a new cost estimate for the mall plan. Meanwhile, Douglas County Clerk Patty Jaimes said today that she expected to find a recently-submitted petition to be valid. Representatives of Citizens for a Better Downtown had submitted the petition with about 4,430 signatures of residents in favor of putting a mall-related referendum on the April ballot.

A photo showed a few people cautiously picking their way up Mount Oread via 14th Street. The street’s hilly surface had been closed to vehicular traffic after an overnight freeze and more snow had caused new hazards.

Those who traveled to Kansas University by car might have been interested to hear that KU officials were requesting the Kansas Board of Regents to amend their capital improvements budget to include a multilevel parking structure. The building would add more than 600 parking spaces for campus.
