Natural gas leak causes evacuation of buildings near 11th and New Hampshire streets

Emergency crews responding to a natural gas leak are clearing buildings on Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets between 10th and 11th streets.

Two city streets were blocked off and about a dozen businesses were evacuated after a delivery truck hit a natural gas meter in the alley between the 1000 blocks of Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets Wednesday morning, according to Black Hills Energy spokesman Curt Floerchinger.

The incident occurred around 10:30 a.m., and crews worked for about an hour replacing a broken valve on the meter. Floerchinger said crews shut off gas to the block quickly, but businesses on both the 1000 blocks of Massachusetts and New Hampshire streets were evacuated as a precaution. By 11:30, streets and businesses had reopened.

No injuries or major damage was reported.
