25 years ago: Do neighborhood PACs have unfair impact on elections?

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 15, 1987:

  • City commissioners who were running for re-election were of the opinion that a newly-formed political action committee could have too much influence on upcoming elections. However, candidates running for the incumbents’ seats said that the new Old West Lawrence PAC was simply a healthy sign of community involvement in city politics. The OWL neighborhood group had established the committee on Jan. 28 to endorse candidates who shared the interests of the neighborhood.
  • Local parents were finding a shortage of daycare for infants, defined by state regulations as children below the age of 18 months. Shelly Platz, director of the Infant Day Care Center at 101-AA Bristol Terrace, said that six months was a typical time for a family to spend on the waiting list for care. There were already six babies on the center’s waiting list for next September.
