The downtown-mall saga continued as a petition signed by over 4,400 Lawrence residents was headed for review by city attorney Milton P. Allen Sr. Even if the initiative failed to make it on the ballot for the April 7 election, city commissioners Ernest Angino and Mike Amyx announced that they would push to get a mall public financing question on the ballot. “I’ve been getting so many different signals that I don’t know what the public wants,” Angino said. “There’s so much flip-flopping, we need a vote. If they say yes to public financing for a downtown mall, then we proceed. If they say no, then we’re done.” Amyx added that the large number of signatures on the petition showed “a lot of concern about downtown development.”
