Man pleads no contest in Taser incident

A 49-year-old Lawrence man pleaded no contest Friday to two charges for a July 6 incident in which Douglas County Sheriff’s officers had to subdue him with a Taser.

Martin Dean Wales entered the pleas to criminal threat and aggravated assault, said Cheryl Wright, a spokeswoman for the Douglas County District Attorney’s office. Wales initially faced 11 charges in the case after sheriff’s officers alleged Wales refused to comply with demands to leave a building in the 1700 block of East 1350 Road, just east of Michigan Street in Lawrence. Earlier Wales was in a fight with a woman inside, and she had left the house and was treated for injuries at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

District Judge Sally Pokorny is scheduled to sentence Wales March 30.
