From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Feb. 1, 1972:

• A fire of undetermined origin had caused an estimated $8,000 to $10,000 damage to the Estes Photo Studio on 807 Massachusetts Street. The fire had started in the basement and had caused extensive smoke damage upstairs.
• Lyian Sheard, 57, of Oskaloosa, had been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Mrs. Marie Catt, 49, a few nights earlier. Robert Curtiss Hall, 43, also of Oskaloosa, was being held for investigation with charges possibly to be filed later, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s office. Mrs. Catt had apparently been strangled in a vacant trailer house. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation had been assisting the sheriff’s office with the case.
• An explosion in a Kansas University steam tunnel between Battenfeld Hall and Sprague Apartments, 1400 Lilac Lane, had caused $30,000 to $50,000 in damages to both buildings and to an adjacent parking lot.
