The Boys and Girls Club is looking for volunteers to help it create a fun YouTube video that will feature club kids telling President Barack Obama why they’d like him to come to their Feb. 6 Youth of the Year Celebration.

Letters have been written, and contacts have been made, but the Boys and Girls Club would like to add a social media component to their appeal to the president.

This project will require someone who is free between 3:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. for a few days during the week of Jan. 7.

Volunteers need to have their own video camera and computer to minimally edit and upload a three- to four-minute video for YouTube.

Club kids will be filmed at the Boys and Girls Club Teen Site and two to three of the elementary school sites throughout the week.

Immediate needs

• Headquarters Counseling Center is seeking empathetic, caring and non-judgmental volunteers to answer its counseling and suicide prevention hotline calls.

The center will soon be starting its interview and screening process for its spring training program, which this year will include ASIST training — a national evidence-based suicide prevention training program.

Learn more at one of its upcoming information meetings: Thursday, Jan. 17, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Headquarters Counseling Center, 211 E. Eighth St., lower level; Wednesday, Jan. 23, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at Fire Station #5, 1911 Stewart Ave.; or on Monday, Jan. 28, from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 946 Vermont St.

At these information meetings, you’ll have the opportunity to talk with current volunteers who can tell you what this training and experience and volunteer work has done for them both personally and professionally.

Because of the nature of the work, volunteers must be at least 20 years old with a minimum of one year of independent living from a parent/guardian.

• Kansas Tick-Borne Disease Advocates Inc. is looking for compassionate and patient volunteers to serve on its board of directors.

Board members meet the second Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. in the United Way building, 2518 Ridge Court, and are needed to commit anywhere from two to 10 hours per month on projects for the agency.

Specifically, board members with expertise in the following areas are needed: Quickbooks 12, nonprofit administration, legal matters, social work and counseling, fundraising and marketing, event planning, risk management and community development.

Additionally, KSTBDA is looking for volunteers to provide administrative support in its office, such as filing, answering the phone and data entry.

• Heartland Community Health Center is looking for an individual to volunteer as a resource specialist in the HCHC food pantry.

This volunteer will gain valuable experience working with underserved populations, connecting them to various resources in the community to ensure that all needs of the client are met.
