From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 26, 1972:

• A massive traffic jam in the neighborhood around the Harry S. Truman residence in Independence, Mo., shattered the city’s calm shortly after this morning’s announcement of the former president’s death. Cars were bumper-to-bumper in the neighborhood and a heavy police guard had been placed at both the Truman residence and the Harry S. Truman Library several blocks away. Truman had entered Research Hospital in Kansas City three weeks earlier after having battled lung congestion for two weeks at home. President Nixon today ordered Dec. 28 as a national day of mourning and directed that flags on all federal buildings be displayed at half staff for the next 30 days.
• Staff at Lawrence Memorial Hospital learned this morning that LMH had been formally accredited for the next two years by the Joint Committee on Accreditation of Hospitals. A three-page report from the JCAH had arrived today, 15 weeks after a two-day investigation.
