From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 19, 1987:

• City officials said today that they expected construction to begin next year on a $3.1 million project to widen a long stretch of Sixth Street. The plan called for widening Sixth from two lanes to five (four traffic lanes and a center turn lane) from Rockledge Road to Kasold Drive, and from two lanes to four lanes from Kasold to Monterey Way. The city hoped that the project would be completed before the end of 1988, but according to Mike Wildgen, assistant city manager, an accurate completion date was hard to predict due to weather and traffic needs. “It’s not like building Wakarusa Drive, where you didn’t have any traffic,” Wildgen explained.
• Gov. Mike Hayden this week endorsed the Kansas Board of Regents’ proposal to end the state’s longstanding policy of open admissions to public universities. Under the new policy, Kansas high school graduates would have to meet minimum standards to enter any of the six regents universities.
