40 years ago: LHS orchestra returns from Chicago trip

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 16, 1972:

  • The 85 members of the Lawrence High School Orchestra were enjoying a triumphant return from a four-day trip to Chicago. The group had performed this week under their director Larry Williams at the Midwest National Band and Orchestra Clinic.
  • In today’s update on local ice rinks, Fred DeVictor, assistant parks and recreation director, said that skating conditions at Central [now Watson] Park were “pretty good,” but that the ice covering Peterson Pond and Potter Lake, although thick enough for safety, was somewhat rough due to recent weather conditions.
  • Salvation Army Capt. Howard Chase reported today that the organization’s Christmas fund drive was about halfway to its goal. The drive had gotten off to a slow start, but donations had picked up as the weather had cleared and more shoppers had begun to appear downtown.
