From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 15, 1972:

• A strip of industrial land on the south bank of the Kansas River east of Sixth and Massachusetts was currently under discussion by the Lawrence City Commission. City officials were scheduled to meet today with leaseholder and Bowersock Mills and Power Co. president Rees Jackman, who had asked the city either to buy him out for $250,000 or to let him purchase the land, excluding the portion used by the Lawrence Paper Co. City Manager Buford Watson said that a key question on the proposal for the city purchase was “Why would we want it?” but added that a recent consultant’s report had stressed the value of the river as a city asset and that “the jury [was] still out” on Jackman’s proposal.
• A report of an unidentified flying object located over the east part of town was received at 6:07 this morning by Lawrence police.Officers said that they had seen the object themselves and had been watching it for several minutes before receiving the report. Officers described it as a star with unusual surface activities.
