From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 14, 1912:

• “There are several organizations in this city preparing to do good and kind deeds for Christmas. They are all along the right lines. This paper is for every one of them. But there is going to be a lot of duplication if there is not more unity in action. To that end there will be a meeting held at the Y.M.C.A. on Dec. 23 of representatives from each organization in the Christmas giving. Please send your representatives there at that time. The Journal-World is pleased with all the arrangements that are being made but it is most pleased with the Congregational church. Dr. Elderkin is asking his people to give $100 for the purchase of toys for Christmas. Not a thing but toys will be given and the children will get all they need. At the proposed meeting the list of children can be handed in…. If you know the names of of families with children that are likely to be neglected, send them in either to this office or to Dr. Elderkin. The toy idea is almost an inspiration.”
• “Willie Wernsen’s honeymoon was rudely interrupted this morning when the strong arm of the law reached out and thrust him back into the city jail. Willie is being held there pending his trial on a charge of violating the prohibitory law and maintaining a nuisance. His bond was fixed at $600, and his trial set for next Wednesday morning. Willie was married yesterday to Pearl Hill and the two appeared this morning for a trial on a charge of indecent conduct. This charge was dismissed and the new one preferred against Wernsen.”
