25 years ago: ‘Warm Hearts’ raising funds for assistance to families

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Dec. 1, 1987:

Lawrence city commissioners last week had approved allocating up to $5,000 to Lawrence Warm Hearts to finance advertising and printing costs. The fund drive for Warm Hearts, which provided assistance to families who had exhausted other means of paying their winter fuel bills, was to kick off next week with a goal of $60,000. “We’re getting started earlier this year because this winter is predicted to be colder than usual,” said state Rep. Jessie Branson, D-Lawrence, honorary chair of the program. “Even though we had a relatively mild winter last year, we fell short of meeting the need for emergency fuel assistance in Douglas County We don’t want that to happen this year.” Families in need could receive up to $500 in assistance from the program.
