A 49-year-old Overland Park man who faces federal methamphetamine and firearm charges was transferred to federal custody on Wednesday.

According to the federal complaint unsealed Wednesday, prosecutors accuse William Arthur Sheldon Jr. on Aug. 24 of possessing with intent to distribute five grams or more of meth and carrying a pistol while committing a drug trafficking crime.

According to an affidavit, a confidential informant told Douglas County Sheriff’s investigators Sheldon was in Lawrence on Aug. 24 selling meth, and a Lawrence police officer stopped Sheldon as he was driving on 23rd Street in a pickup truck with an expired license plate. Sheldon was arrested for driving with a suspended license, and a Shawnee police K-9 unit discovered a substance believed to be methamphetamine and a gun in the truck.

According to the affidavit, Sheldon, in an jail interview with police, said both the gun and the truck belonged to his fiancee and he did not know there were drugs in the truck. Police in the affidavit allege Sheldon failed to register with authorities as required after a 1981 conviction in Arizona.
