The Douglas County Commission will hear a proposal to change the building code for unincorporated portions of the county during its meeting tonight.

The adoption of the 2012 I-codes will help bring building in the county up-to-date and compatible with most surrounding areas, said Linda Finger, the county’s director of zoning and codes. Johnson and Sedgwick counties both use the 2006 version of this set of regulations, and they plan to adopt the 2012 version. Lawrence is working under the 2008 version. Douglas County’s existing code was written in 1997.

The switch to I-codes may reduce insurance rates for some homeowners, Finger said.

Other issues in front of the commission this week:

• Finger will present the cases for several temporary business permits including one for a flea market at 1809 E. 1450 Road.

• An executive session in which the three commissioners will meet privately with the county’s lawyer to discuss a land-purchasing issue. This meeting is expected to take about 30 minutes, and Craig Weinaug, county administrator, said that it’s unlikely commissioners will take action following the executive session.

• A request for a loan for the Kansas Dinner Train.

• A request for partial funding for maintenance of North 900 Road east of U.S. Highway 59.

• The decision to end or extend the burn ban that’s in effect.
