Topeka man sentenced in Lawrence shooting

A 20-year-old Topeka man who pleaded no contest in July to shooting a bouncer outside a former Lawrence bar was sentenced Monday to 21 months in prison.

District Judge Kay Huff ordered Dante Marcus Fields to serve the prison term for the March 17 shooting in the parking lot outside the former Taste Lounge, Bar and Grill, 804 W. 24th St.

Fields pleaded no contest to one count of aggravated assault and aggravated battery. Prosecutors said the bouncer Terrance Fowler, 30, of Lawrence, confronted Fields in the parking lot for stealing a tip jar from the bar. Fields pointed a handgun at Fowler and later shot him during a physical struggle.

Lawrence police arrested Fields in a vehicle in west Lawrence minutes later and recovered the gun he had thrown out of the car’s window.

Fowler received treatment for a bullet wound on the left side of his abdomen.
