The Kansas Human Rights Commission in Topeka has announced that Rehelio “Ray” A. Samuel, of Lawrence, has been recognized by the International Association of Human Rights Agencies and the National Association of Human Rights Workers at their conferences in New Orleans. He was honored for his career and contributions in the human rights field. He served in the military for more than 20 years, with the objective of improving race relations and equal opportunity. He was hired by the city of Lawrence in 1972 in the human relations department and was in charge of enforcing civil rights laws for housing, employment and public accommodations. He retired in 2007.

Thirty-nine students from around Kansas have been accepted for the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science at Fort Hays State University. The class began its two-year curriculum on Aug. 20. Students must have completed at least two years of high school with distinction in mathematics or science. Area students include Morgan Linder, of Baldwin High School; Abigail Ladner, of Free State High School; and Elizabeth Lewis, also of Free State.
