40 years ago: KU kicks off new year with new chancellor

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 27, 1972:

  • In his first speech as interim chancellor, and on the 50th anniversary of his enrollment in Kansas University as a freshman, Raymond Nichols this week pledged to maintain KU’s forward momentum. “The only direction this university knows is forward, so let us move ahead together,” Nichols said at the annual opening convocation on the first day of classes, one week after he had been named interim chancellor following the resignation of Laurence Chalmers.
  • Classes also got under way this week for Lawrence children as half-day sessions ushered in the new school year. Full-day sessions were to begin later this week.
  • At the Munich Olympics, swimmer Mark Spitz smashed the world record in the 200-meter men’s butterfly, winning the gold medal with a time of 2:00.70.
