25 years ago: OWL group faces defeat on rezoning issue

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 27, 1987:

  • On a unanimous vote this week, the Lawrence City Commission decided not to initiate a zoning change requested by the Old West Lawrence Neighborhood Assn. The OWL residents had been battling against Douglas County Bank’s expansion into the 800 block between Tennessee and Kentucky streets and had spoken out in opposition to the rezoning to residence-office approved earlier this year. The group had also objected strenuously to the demolition of eight houses in the block which had occurred in June.
  • A 25-year-old Lawrence man was being held in the Douglas County Jail this morning on the charge of having held up a liquor store. According to police reports, the man had entered Bahnmaier Liquor Store, 900 New Hampshire, carrying a cloth purse with a gun inside. The clerk, observing the gun, had turned over about $300 to the man. With the help of eyewitness accounts of the man’s appearance, officers had been able to locate him about three hours later in his car at the corner of 11th and Pennsylvania.
