Free State Jamboree on tap tonight

Free State High athletes are about to get a whiff of game-night experience with the Fall Sports Jamboree at 6 p.m. today.

FSHS athletic director Mike Hill said the annual event will let the Firebirds get game-ready.

The coaches, Hill noted, like getting a chance to put the athletes through a pregame routine. And there’s more to it for the athletes than playing in front of their friends and family for the first time this year.

“From the kids’ perspective,” Hill said, “its a chance to break up the monotony that comes in the second week of practice or so.”

Teams will get introduced at FSHS Football Stadium before anyone starts scrimmaging. That begins at 6:15, with volleyball, followed by boys soccer, girls golf, gymnastics and girls tennis.

The first scrimmages are to start at 6:30 — varsity, junior varsity, sophomore and freshman volleyball players square off in the main gym; the boys soccer C-team plays over at the soccer field; and the freshman football players will have a brief scrimmage.

Beginning at 7, varsity and JV boys soccer players will scrimmage. At the same time, Free State’s varsity and JV football players will get started.

During a break in the football scrimmage at 7:25, Free State’s cross country teams will run on the track.

The FSHS Booster Club will have apparel and refreshments for sale.
