From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 21, 1972:

• Were Lawrence air conditioners busier than water sprinklers during the summer’s heat wave? Local utility companies were reporting heavy usage during last week’s hot spell in Lawrence. Kansas Power and Light reported that the year’s peak had probably been hit on a recent Friday afternoon when consumption exceeded 177,000 kilowatts. The city water department, however, reported that water usage, though high, had not exceeded or even reached last year’s peak.
• Raymond Nichols had assumed his duties of interim chancellor at Kansas University following the resignation of Laurence Chalmers last week. Meeting with KU’s vice chancellors, Nichols recommended that the university’s opening convocation, scheduled a week from today, be canceled. The Kansas Board of Regents had promised to appoint a search committee to find a new chancellor as soon as possible.
