Douglas County Sheriff’s officers stopped about 450 vehicles Saturday night and early Sunday as part of a saturation patrol and vehicle check lane on 23rd Street, said Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman.

Officers stopped 403 vehicles in a DUI check lane in the 700 block of East 23rd Street and arrested two people on DUI charges and cited one person for driving while suspended and another for carrying an open container. In the check lane, an 18-year-old Wichita man was also arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to sell marijuana and for criminally carrying a weapon because officers found an expandable baton in the vehicle, Lewis said.

In the earlier saturation patrol from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, officers used laser radar equipment in the same location on 23rd Street, at 31st Street and Haskell Avenue and in the downtown area, he said. Officers stopped 49 vehicles in that effort and wrote 26 tickets for seat-belt violations, 18 citations for speeding and three for driving while suspended. One person was arrested for possession of a controlled substance as part of the patrol.

The patrols were part of a grant from the Kansas Department of Transportation to fund overtime to have extra officers on patrol to enforce traffic offenses.
