Kansas City, Mo., man pleads no contest to fleeing Lawrence police

A 21-year-old Kansas City, Mo., man pleaded no contest Friday in connection with a July vehicle chase with police.

James Edward Jackson pleaded to one count of felony fleeing or attempting to elude police, and he agreed to pay restitution in the case, said Cheryl Wright, a district attorney’s office spokeswoman.

Lawrence police said that early on July 14 Jackson was accused of stealing a vehicle from a Lawrence man after taking keys out of the back pocket of a man at a party in the 2500 block of West 31st Street. Jackson then failed to stop for officers near Kansas Highway 10 and U.S. Highway 40. Officers pursued Jackson in the vehicle on the South Lawrence Trafficway, and the vehicle eventually lost a front tire. He stopped the vehicle in the 3200 block of Iowa Street before he was arrested on foot.

District Judge Paula Martin is scheduled to sentence Jackson 11:15 a.m. Sept. 20.
