From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 18, 1987:

• Three Lawrence residents were to be named this week to an advisory committee for the upcoming state census. The committee was to help advise Secretary of State Bill Graves about a plan to count the state’s estimated 2.4 million people, according to Brent Anderson, state census coordinator. The Kansas Legislature had authorized a budget of $3.36 million for the one-time census of the state’s residents in 1988 in order to redraw the state’s legislative districts in time for the 1990 legislative elections. Kansas law required that the legislature reapportion itself in the ninth year of every decade, but there were no reliable census figures currently available. (Later this week, the Lawrence residents selected for the advisory committee were announced as Howard Hill, a former city commissioner and currently director at KANU-FM, and Kansas University professors George McCleary and Allen Cigler.)
• Lawrence attorney Fred N. Six had been named to the Kansas Court of Appeals, according to a spokesman for Gov. Mike Hayden. Six, a 58-year-old Lawrence native and Kansas University alumnus, was to fill the post left vacant by the retirement of Judge Sherman Parks.
