From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 18, 1912:

• “Horse racing in ye olden days of county fairs was one of the special features of the annual week of fall festivities. But in the past few years this sport has been struggling against all manner of opposition and horse racing as a part of the Fair was neglected. But in the last two years the order has been showing another change and horse racing seems to be coming back into its own…. At the Fair this year horse racing will be one of the leading attractions. A program of races has been prepared that will bring some of the best horses in the state here.”
• “The police department is on the war path today. Those who haven’t paid the tax on the dogs about the place have aroused the ire of the blue coats and final warning is being given today warning the delinquents to pay up. Those who refuse will be in danger of losing their pets.”
• “Mr. Weaver has gone to New York and the Eastern markets for the purchase of Fall goods. He will visit the ‘Merchandise Buyers’ Exposition and Fashion Show’ at New Grand Central Palace…. Mr. Weaver anticipate the best business for the fall that the store has ever experienced. Conditions are right. The farmers are prosperous, and he says his stock will be better and more comprehensive than ever before.”
