From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 16, 1972:

• Several state, county, and city officials met today for the unveiling of the Lawrence Area Transportation Study. Prepared by the state highway department planning division, the 123-page report was a master plan for nearly $121 million in expenditures for local street and highway development between now and the year 2000. Proposed as “essential projects” were east and south bypasses, connecting U.S. 59 just south of the Wakarusa with U.S. 24-40 northeast of Lawrence. Other “internal” projects included in the recommendations were a freeway to the new Clinton Dam and a new downtown Kaw River Bridge.
• Supporters of a planned Lawrence Boys’ Club had begun a fundraising campaign with a goal of $20,000. With about $3,400 already in the treasury, the group hoped to achieve their goal by Sept. 1. Dr. Larry Mayer, president of the organization’s board of directors, said that if the goal were reached by the first of September, a site could probably be reasonably acquired and the club could be in operation as early as October. According to an article today, the club would be “designed to help channel boys’ energies into positive and productive channels.”
