A South Lawrence Trafficway resurfacing project will begin at 8 a.m. Thursday, and the Kansas Department of Transportation says drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes.

Work will take place during the daylight hours via a pilot car and flagger operation on what is Kansas Highway 10 on the west edge of Lawrence. It is scheduled to be completed Saturday evening.

The work will be on an 8.43-mile section beginning at the Lecompton interchange of the Kansas Turnpike south to the intersection with U.S. Highway 59 or the southern edge of Iowa Street.

Crews will be doing chip seal work on the shoulders. Once that work is complete, the project will be suspended until Sept. 10, when resurfacing work on the main lanes will begin. The shoulder work was originally scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Local traffic is encouraged to use alternate routes, said Kim Qualls, a KDOT spokeswoman.

KDOT also urges drivers to be alert and obey warning signs when approaching work zones to protect workers in the area, she said.

The entire $938,218 project is scheduled to be completed in early November, weather permitting.
