Man injured in accident near Tonganoxie on Sunday

A 49-year-old Tonganoxie man was taken to an area hospital after a one-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon about two miles northeast of Tonganoxie.

The man, John P. Rome, was driving south on Leavenworth County Road 5 about a quarter-mile west of 199th Street. His 2000 Ford Taurus exited the road and eventually hit a shoulder embankment, Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office reports said.

A nearby resident who was sitting on his porch saw Rome drive by, sheriff’s reports said. About 4:20 p.m., the resident, Charles Tannehill, heard an extended car horn sound, squealing brakes, then a crash. Tannehill, a member of the Stranger Township Fire Department, drove to the scene and provided first aid to Rome, reports said.

Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Services took Rome to Kansas University Hospital in Kansas City, Kan., with life-threatening injuries. A hospital official there said Monday that Rome was in good condition.
