From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 11, 1987:

• Downtown Lawrence was to get a slightly new look starting this fall as the first of a series of seasonal banners were to be suspended at street intersections. Beginning Sept. 1, banners with an autumn flair were to be hung at street crossings along Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont streets. The design, by Pat Jancosek, was to feature gold leaves falling against a sky-blue background. Each season, 38 banners, designed by local artists in a competition this year, were to hang along the streets. The total cost of the project, according to the city contract, was $10,052.
• At a ceremony this week, Sandy Praeger and Nancy Longhurst were the first women inducted into the Lawrence Rotary Club. A U.S. Supreme Court ruling early in May had upheld a California law barring Rotary International from ousting local chapters that had female members, and the local club had immediately extended invitations to four women of the community. State Rep. Jessie Branson, D-Lawrence, and Sandra Shaw, director of the Bert Nash Community Mental Health Center, had also been approved for membership and were to be inducted later.
