40 years ago: Road work resumes on K-10, 31st Street

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Aug. 7, 1972:

  • After a rain delay last week, asphalt resurfacing of K-10 in Douglas County and surfacing of 31st Street between Haskell and Louisiana was finally getting started. Joe McCourt, Lawrence engineer for the State Highway Commission, said that the K-10 resurfacing project between Lawrence and the Douglas-Johnson County line would be complete in about four days. On 31st Street, workers were laying a 10-inch rock base in preparation for an asphalt surface treatment. The base was expected to be completed in about 2 weeks and an additional week would be needed for the road to be primed, sealed, cured, and ready for traffic.
  • Four men were reported to have held up the American State Bank in downtown Osawatomie today, escaping with the cash from two tellers’ stations. Roadblocks had been set up in a wide area in east-central Kansas in an attempt to catch the robbers.
