Lawrence police ticketed a 33-year-old Lawrence man Friday after he was accused of kicking a puppy on April 6 in the 1600 block of University Drive.

Sgt. Ted Bordman, a patrol supervisor, said a 72-year-old Lawrence woman at 7:30 a.m. April 6 she was walking her son’s 19-week-old lab mix puppy on a leash on the sidewalk south of the street. She alleged the suspect was walking toward her and then kicked and stomped on the dog, telling her to “keep the dog away from me” before he continued walking east.

She told her son what happened but didn’t call police at the time. A veterinarian examined the puppy, which had bruises but no serious injuries, Bordman said. On Wednesday morning the woman encountered the man again when she was walking the dog in the same area. Bordman said the woman alleged that when she questioned him, the man said he would kick the dog again, exchanged vulgarities toward her and walked away.

She called police after that incident, and a plainclothes officer walked with the woman in the area this morning. She identified the man, and the officer and another uniformed officer made contact with the suspect in the 1500 block of University Drive, Bordman said police gave the man notice to appear in municipal court on an animal cruelty charge for the April 6 allegation and disorderly conduct for Wednesday’s alleged incident.

Police Friday referred questions about the man’s name to municipal court officials, who said it would take four to five days for the ticket to process.
