Lawrence, Topeka reach record temperatures Wednesday

It was a hot one.

The high temperature recorded for today in Lawrence — 94 degrees — beat out a record set April 25, 1989, by two degrees.

That record is technically unofficial, the National Weather Service’s Jennifer Bowman said, as the official daily register of the mercury didn’t start in Lawrence until 1996. But on that day in Topeka, it was also 92 degrees. And today was even more sweltering in Topeka, Bowman said, as a record-breaking 97 degrees was recorded, tied for the highest temperature in April since 1893.
