Golf tournament to raise money for scholarships for children of first-responders

Registration is open for the Valor Public Safety Awards Golf Tournament May 11 at Alvamar Public Golf Course.

The tournament is a main fund-raiser for Lawrence Chamber of Commerce’s Valor Public Safety Awards that provides scholarships to children of Douglas County first responders.

Last fall the chamber honored 14 firefighters and officers for heroic acts while on duty, including the June 2009 rescue of a boy from the Kansas River. Four college-age children of the inaugural class of honorees have been awarded scholarships.

The 2012 awards ceremony will be awarded in the fall.

“The Valor Awards is a great opportunity for the community to say ‘thank you’ to local first responders,” said Lawrence resident Harry Herington, CEO of NIC Inc. and a co-founder of awards program. “I look forward to building upon the outpouring of community support in 2011 and generating even greater participation of Douglas County residents this year.”

Registration for the golf tournament, presented by Crown Automotive of Lawrence, ends May 4. The registration fee is $100 per person, and public safety personnel receive a discounted rate of $75 per person.
