From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 24, 1987:

• Residents surrounding the 800 block of Tennessee Street who were opposed to a recent rezoning decision were planning to take the issue to the Lawrence Board of Zoning Appeals. The Lawrence City Commission had unanimously approved rezoning the block from residential and off-street parking uses to residential office use, and the Douglas County Bank had plans to expand its facilities at Ninth and Kentucky. City planner David Guntert said that the appeal had been filed too late to be placed on the May BZA agenda, but that the board would consider the issue at its June meeting.
• The Kansas University band program was in danger of losing its current size and quality due to a drop in funding. “Without a significant band scholarship fund, KU is finding it increasingly difficult to compete for the talented musicians needed to maintain an outstanding band,” said a recent letter to band alumni. Band officials wanted to provide a fund of at least $90,000 for scholarships in 1987.
