Weekend Lawrence police roundup includes accidents, arrests

Westbound lanes of Interstate 70 west of Lawrence were shut down for about 10 minutes Sunday night as Douglas County Sheriff’s officers assisted a person who was on an overpass bridge near the Lecompton interchange.

Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman, said a passerby called for help and was concerned about 10:30 p.m. after seeing a man standing on the bridge. Deputies were able to talk down the individual and assist in getting him psychological medical attention, Lewis said.

A Kansas Turnpike Authority dispatcher said state troopers suspended westbound traffic in the area until a sheriff’s officer took the man into custody.

In other weekend incidents:

• A 57-year-old Lawrence man was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital Sunday morning after a one-vehicle crash southwest of Lawrence.

Lewis said Roy Wiggins Jr. lost control of his westbound 2008 Dodge pickup truck about 6 a.m. in the 900 block of North 500 Road, or County Road 460. The truck went off the north side of the road and crashed. Deputies suspect alcohol as a contributing factor, and test results are pending, Lewis said.

• Lawrence police arrested a suspected drunken driver at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning in the 1600 block of Massachusetts Street in the middle of the Kansas Half Marathon, said Sgt. Trent McKinley, a police spokesman. The race began at 7:30 a.m. crossed Massachusetts Street at 17th Street at the beginning and end of the race.

No one was injured, but a 28-year-old Lawrence man was arrested.

• A 39-year-old Lawrence woman was arrested 6 p.m. Saturday on suspicion of aggravated assault after she was accused of threatening another person with a knife, McKinley said. The incident was part of an argument that occurred near an apartment on Michigan Street and also in the 300 block of Maine Street near Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Douglas County prosecutors Monday were making a decision about charges.

• Also Saturday afternoon, a 38-year-old Lawrence man was arrested on charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage and criminal restraint stemming from a domestic incident in the 4900 block of Stoneback Drive. One person was treated at the hospital for injuries that were not considered life threatening, McKinley said. Prosecutors were also deciding Monday about formal charges in the case.

• A suspect about 3 a.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of Tennessee Street threw a concrete block through the back window of a Lawrence police patrol car, a 2011 white Crown Victoria, McKinley said. It caused about $1,000 worth of damage due to a broken window, dented trunk and damaged tail light, he said. The officer had been sent to a noise complaint in the area. No suspects for the damage have been identified.

• Lawrence police officers were also called about 1:45 a.m. Sunday to The Cave, a nightclub in The Oread, 1200 Ave., about a possible shooting, but officers determined the report was unfounded. The initial report was possibly due to the sound of bottles breaking in a stairway during a fight, McKinley said.
