40 years ago: Two protest events approved for Relays

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 23, 1972:

Two anti-war protest events to be held at the Kansas Relays had been sanctioned by the Kansas University administration. Chancellor Laurence Chalmers and the leaders of the protest organizers had engaged in two meetings this week, after which they had come to an agreement. The first protest was to consist of a small group reading an anti-war statement from the awards platform inside Memorial Stadium. Later in the afternoon, a short statement was to be read over the public address system by the regular announcer, to be followed by a minute of silence. Chalmers had refused permission for the original idea of a demonstration held on the track and field.
