The dean of Kansas University’s School of Engineering will leave KU to become the provost and executive vice chancellor at Louisiana State University.

Stuart Bell has been dean of the school since 2002.

A national search will be conducted to fill the spot on a permanent basis. And Jeff Vitter, KU’s provost, will consult with engineering faculty, students and staff before naming an interim dean.

“I’ve had an amazing opportunity to work with some brilliant, hard-working colleagues during the past 10 years,” Bell said in a written statement. “Even though I’m looking forward to new challenges at LSU, I know I’m leaving a wonderful institution with faculty, staff, students and alumni who are nothing short of inspiring.”

Bell has helped attract major engineering gifts, including a $20 million donation from Madison “Al” and Lila Self and a $32 million estate gift from the late Charles and Mary Jane Spahr in 2011.

Eaton Hall was constructed during his tenure, and construction is ongoing on a new research building that will open later this year. Undergraduate enrollments at the school also are at a 29-year high.

Bell will begin in his new position on Aug. 2.
