Lawrence softball stingy in two-game split

? Lawrence High’s softball team allowed just eight hits on the night and split a two-game, two-team series.

Shutout, 2-0, by Shawnee Mission East, the Lions rebounded to take a 9-0 victory over SM North in the second game.

“We only gave up two runs and went 1-1,” LHS coach Nick Wood said, “which is kind of tricky. But we definitely felt we got better today. We’re excited.”

The Lions (3-9) managed just one hit –a double by Marly Carmona — against SM East.

“We played really, really well defensively,” Wood said. “We just could not get our bats going.”

They did in the second game, banging out a dozen against Shawnee Mission North.

“I’m just really proud of our defensive effort,” Wood said. “All season we’ve had one inning where we hurt ourselves, imploded a little bit, but tonight we put it together for the full seven innings. When we don’t give teams extra outs, we can be a successful ballclub. And it was nice to see our bats going.”

Lawrence will host SM South at 6 p.m., on Thursday.
