Firebirds softball wins big, loses big

? Free State High’s softball team split a pair of one-sided games Tuesday, defeating Shawnee Mission North, 16-1, and falling to SM East, 11-3.

“That’s typically the way we’ve been playing,” FSHS coach Lee Ice said. “We had pretty good focus in Game One. Then the wheels kind of fell off. We gave them more than three outs in an inning.”

The Firebirds collected 17 hits against SM North but had just six hits and made five errors against SM East.

Free State’s Hannah Whipple went 5-for-7 on the day, and Courtney Parker homered in the opener.

The Firebirds (3-5) will play host to Lawrence High at 3 p.m. Saturday.
