25 years ago: All four Rusty’s stores to be replaced or renamed

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 16, 1987:

An old name in grocery stores was being phased out in Lawrence. Jim Lewis, owner of all four Rusty’s IGA stores here, announced this morning that he had sold Rusty’s Northside, 608 N. Second Street, to Roger Kuker of Topeka, a sales and service representative for Fleming Foods. Lewis also announced that the new 53,000-square-foot grocery store under construction at 23rd and Louisiana would open under the name of Checkers. The new store, which was replacing the Rusty’s store at that location, was scheduled to open around June 1. The two other Rusty’s stores, which were in the Hillcrest and Westridge shopping centers, were to remain under Lewis’ ownership, but he was planning to change their names from Rusty’s to J.L.’s.
