Lawrence Humane Society is in need of volunteers to provide foster homes for kittens and puppies. Many animals come to the shelter too young, too small or not healthy enough for adoption yet. The only way to help these animals thrive is by having dedicated volunteers take care of them in their home for a few weeks, until they’re ready for adoption. Three foster orientations remain for the month of April: 1 p.m. Saturday, 6 p.m. April 26, and 1 p.m. April 28. No experience is required, and volunteer foster parents will be provided with all the supplies needed to take care of the animals. All potential foster homes must complete a Foster License Request through the Kansas Animal Health Department, which includes a $10 fee that is paid to the Health Department. Immediate needs

• Visiting Nurses is seeking volunteer massage therapists and/or energy work practitioners to provide care to hospice patients. Previous training/work in massage therapy and/or energy work is required, as is comfort working around each patient’s physical restrictions. The time requirement is flexible, and volunteers will have the opportunity to experience wonderful personal connections and growth working with hospice patients. • Langston Hughes School is seeking volunteers to help with its carnival from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Volunteers will help with a variety of tasks including setup, managing booths, tear-down and whatever else is needed. • Douglas County Child Development Association, or DCCDA, will be hosting an open house at its new office from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 28. Volunteers are needed to pass out fliers around town starting now and will also be needed to help clean up after the event.
