25 years ago: Developers change their focus to suburban mall

From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for April 10, 1987:

The rejection by Lawrence voters of a downtown mall proposal this week had spurred another out-of-town developer to take an interest in building a suburban mall here. Just a few days after residents had gone to the polls to give an overwhelming thumbs-down to mall plans for the 600 block of downtown, a local landowner had received an offer on her property from a mall developer in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Minnie Mae Clevenger, owner of about 60 acres on the south side of Clinton Parkway east of Wakarusa Drive, said that the developer had wanted “to be the first contacted if we do decide to do anything with the property.” Her husband, Jack Clevenger, added, “They’re really getting pushy right now.”
