The NCAA basketball tournament in New Orleans wasn’t the only college championship up for grabs on Monday night, as the Kansas University debate squad had a team advance to the Elite Eight of the National Debate Tournament before getting eliminated.

The team of Sean and Patrick Kennedy, two brothers who are seniors from Leawood, defeated Baylor in the Sweet 16 round of the tournament before losing to Loyola University, according to updates from the Kansas Debate team’s Facebook page. This year’s tournament was held at Emory University in Atlanta. The Kennedys earned the seventh overall seed in the elimination rounds of the tournament.

Another KU squad, seniors Mathew Petersen and Mark Wilkins, earned the 16th overall seed and dropped in the Sweet 16 round to the tournament’s top overall seed from Northwestern University, according to updates from the team.

The resolution this year focuses on foreign policy:

“Resolved: The United States Federal Government should substantially increase its democracy assistance to one or more of he following; Egypt, Libya, Syria, Tunisia, Yemen.”

The Kennedys made it to the Elite Eight of the NDT following a performance in which they advanced to the semifinals of the Cross Examination Debate Association’s national tournament the previous weekend.
