From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 29, 1986:
- A debate was scheduled to take place between the Rev. Richard Taylor, Topeka, president of Kansans for Life at Its Best, and Gary Toebben, executive vice president for the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce, who was speaking for Kansans for Effective Liquor Control. The debate in the Kansas Union Ballroom was to be sponsored by Student Union Activities. Kansas voters had little over a month to decide on the liquor-by-the-drink issue, which was to be on the ballot in the Nov. 4 state general election.
- Twenty-one Lawrence High School seniors had been named National Merit Commended Students in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Commended students were those whose scores were within the top 5 percent on the qualifying test.
