Two people were hospitalized in Douglas County last weekend after falling asleep at the wheel and being involved in separate accidents, said Sgt. Steve Lewis, a sheriff’s spokesman.

Lewis said Julian Howard, 36, of Ottawa, lost control of his vehicle about 11 p.m. Friday while headed south on U.S. Highway 59 near Pleasant Grove. He fell asleep and failed to negotiate a curve causing his vehicle to strike a fence and roll over several times. Howard was treated and later released from Lawrence Memorial Hospital, but Lewis said he was ticketed for driving while suspended and failing to provide proof of insurance.

Two hours later on the Farmers Turnpike, or North 1800 Road northwest of Lawrence, a 36-year-old Lawrence woman also fell asleep while driving east near East 700 Road and struck a mailbox. Lindsay Labonte, the driver, was taken to LMH, where she was also treated and released. Her 14-year-old passenger was not injured. No citations were issued, Lewis said.
