An Osage County judge Tuesday convicted a Eudora man of two misdemeanor charges, including one animal cruelty count alleging he neglected horses he owned.

Osage County Attorney Brandon Jones said Salah Ibrahim was convicted on one count of animal cruelty and sentenced to serve 12 months on unsupervised probation. He was also convicted of unlawful disposition of dead animals.

Prosecutors and sheriff’s officers had accused Ibrahim of neglecting the horses during the winter of 2010, and the county seized horses from the property in April 2010.

But Ibrahim has alleged in a federal lawsuit that is still pending against the county that the horses were cared for properly and blamed the harsh winter for at least two of the horses dying.

Ibrahim was ordered to pay $70,000 in restitution to the sheriff’s department for care and boarding of 13 horses seized, and he agreed to relinquish the horses to the county for sale or adoption, Jones said.

Judge Phillip Fromme ruled Ibrahim will serve a 12-month jail term if he’s found to violate his probation.
