A Douglas County judge Monday morning sentenced a 25-year-old Overland Park man to serve more than 10 years in prison for a burglary spree at three west Lawrence homes earlier this year.

District Judge Kay Huff also ordered Scott Blackmon to serve the prison term consecutive to three years he received in a 2008 robbery case in which prosecutors said he was armed with a machete. According to court records, District Judge Michael Malone in 2009 had sentenced Blackmon to probation in the old case after a plea, but prosecutors later revoked his probation.

A jury in August convicted Blackmon of two counts of burglary and one count of aggravated burglary plus six other lesser counts in the new case. On the aggravated burglary count, Blackmon was accused of robbing a Lawrence family’s home March 16 in the 2400 block of Atchison Avenue while the family’s teenage daughter was home alone. In a letter read in court Monday, the girl’s mother said her daughter now is afraid to stay home alone.

“That young girl knew terror,” said prosecutor David Melton, a chief assistant district attorney. “She knew terror based on the defendant’s actions.”

Huff also ordered Blackmon to pay a total of $1,500 restitution to two families for the burglaries.

Blackmon was convicted of burglarizing two other west Lawrence homes around that time, and the jury acquitted him of a fourth one, a March 3 burglary of the home of former Kansas University football players Jake Laptad, Justin Springer, Steven Foster and Drew Dudley. In that burglary, an Orange Bowl ring and Insight Bowl ring were taken.

Defense attorney Michael Clarke had asked Huff to depart from sentencing guidelines and sentence him to five years in prison.

“I can use this time to make myself a better man and can’t wait until I can make myself a better father,” Blackmon said in a brief statement in court.

A co-defendant, Meglin Rego, who pleaded guilty to burglary and conspiracy, testified against Blackmon.
