From the Lawrence Daily Journal-World for Sept. 19, 1986:

• Sam Brownback, a 30-year-old Manhattan attorney, was introduced as the new state secretary of agriculture. He was to finish the term of Harland Priddle, who had resigned in June to run for lieutenant governor with Secretary of State Jack Brier. (Brier had failed to win the Republican nomination for governor in the August primary.) The 12-member Board of Agriculture had received 74 applications for the job, interviewing eight of them before selecting Brownback on a unanimous vote. Brownback’s exact salary was still being negotiated, but Board members had decided that it was appropriate for him to start at a lower salary than his predecessor Priddle.
• Harold Ohmart, who had just begun his 20th year of teaching math at West Junior High School, had been selected as a Kansas nominee for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching.
